International student health insurance

A requirement for enrollment at Texas A&M University-Kingsville
In the United States it is up to each person to provide for their own and their familys health care expenses. This includes international students attending a U.S. university. As an international student (students who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.) enrolled at Texas A&M Kingsville, you are required to have an approved health insurance plan. This is to ensure that medical treatment will be available to you in the event you are injured or become ill while enrolled here. This requirement includes students enrolled in intensive English language programs.

Texas A&M Student Health Insurance

You can meet this requirement in any one of four ways
1. Students may purchase the Texas A&M University System approved Student Health Insurance Plan. This plan has been reviewed by the University and meets all requirements.

2. Students may purchase health insurance coverage other than the Texas A&M University System approved Student Insurance Plan if it has equivalent coverage. This alternate policy must meet or exceed each of the following:
- Medical benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or illness, and
- Repatriation of remains in the amount of $7,500, and
- Medical evacuation to ones home country of at least $10,000,
- A deductible no to exceed $500 per accident or illness, and
- The health insurance company offering the policy must:

have a Best or Standard and Poors rating of at least A-, or a Weiss Research Inc. rating of at least B+, or an Insurance Solvency International, Ltd. rating of at least A-I, or be backed by the full faith and credit of the students home country government.
Students who choose to obtain equivalent coverage must complete the Alternate/Additional Insurance Coverage waiver form on the back of this page. Sample health insurance brochures may be found in the ISS office.

3. If you are a sponsored student (J-1) and your sponsor requires you to have health insurance coverage in order to participate in your program, you are not required to purchase additional health insurance coverage.

4. International students who are employed in graduate assistant positions (working a minimum of 20 hours a week for 41/2 months or longer) entitling them to coverage and who are covered under the System employee group health insurance program are not required to enroll in SSHIP. However, all international students who are covered under the System employee group health insurance program are required to enroll in a standalone policy option under the SSHIP that provides medical evacuation and repatriation coverage, or they must produce evidence that they hold equivalent coverage from other sources. To provide evidence of this additional coverage, you must complete the
All international students will be required to provide proof of insurance coverage to International Student Services.
