Health Insurance
J-1 Insurance
Students and scholars with J-1 visas are required by the U.S. Immigration law to carry specific types of health insurance coverage, including "Repatriation of Remains" (which covers transportation back to the home country in case of death) and "Medical Evacuation" (to pay transportation expenses to the home country or elsewhere for medical treatment). Insurance plans for J-1 students and scholars must meet the following Immigration requirements: medical benefits of at least $100,000 per person and per accident or illness, at least $25,000 for Repatriation of Remains, at least $50,000 of Medical Evacuation coverage, and a deductible not exceeding $500 per accident or illness. This insurance coverage is required by law and must be maintained for as long as the student or scholar (and any dependents) is in the U.S. Any J-1 students or scholar (or J-2 family member) who does not have the required insurance will not be allowed to continue his or her program at ISU. J-1 students and scholars (and any accompanying family members) must carry adequate health insurance for the entire time that they are in the United States.
J-1 students may buy the necessary insurance from ISU for $10 per semester. The $10 will be billed to all J-1 students who are already carrying regular ISU Student Insurance.
