Medical Insurance
International students are required by law to have accident and medical insurance which has benefits particular to international students. You may buy your own insurance, or buy it from the college.
Do I have to buy health insurance?
Unlike many countries, the U.S. government does not support the health system. Each individual must pay the cost of any medical treatment, which can be very expensive. Health insurance costs are usually too much for most Americans to pay out of their pocket. South Seattles health insurance system is used to manage those costs. With insurance, you would only need to pay a small portion of any medical visit
In order to qualify for an insurance waiver your insurance must cover:
- Medical expenses (accident and sickness) up to at least $100,000 USD per cause ($250,000 USD recommended)
- Medical evacuation expenses of at least $10,000 USD
- Repatriation of remains coverage of at least $7,500 USD
Your insurance document must be in English and include dates, a description and amounts of coverage
If you buy your insurance from South Seattle,
we provide insurance coverage for $207.75 per quarter ($69.25/month, school year 2009/2010 ). Medical insurance will be available up to 30 days prior to the start of the quarter. Visit the International Department or call for more information.
If you buy your own insurance, the International Programs Office must have a copy of your insurance documents and give you an insurance waiver. Students who register for classes without an insurance waiver will be required to pay for the schools insurance plan.
